A Block, Or Self-Consciousness

The more you write the more you search for words, words, words. Because you believe the right way to express yourself must already exist. After all, you can’t possibly be that unique—someone must have felt the way you do now before… before. Doesn’t originality stem from combination, rather than creation?

  1. Very good again, Moni.

Yes, creativity often does mix or builds on something already existing. Chopin used folk music and principles of “high art” to create his mazurkas and polonaises. New technology often helps. There would be no Beatles without the electric guitar.

However, the true artistic novelty does exists since it sometimes is content and time dependent. While many things are universal and already invented (Shakespeare lived centuries ago and yet his plays remain current by appealing to our emotions) new realities and perceptions emerge as we are shaped by the constantly changing world. Therefore, writers still can tell us something new although, as you have keenly observed, the “window of opportunity” is narrow, given the legacy of previous generations and the volumes written. The creative process is not an easy one. I recommend the movie called “Vincent and Theo” about Van Gogh and his effort to create something new after french impressionists just invented the new approach to painting.
